Crashes, record runs, and a helicopter: the best photos of a wild, fast day of Indy 500 qualifiers

NASCAR superstar Kyle Larson is racing across the infield of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, climbing into a dark red Chevrolet Suburban and heading for a helicopter near Turn 2. The chopper will fly him away from the chaos of 2024 Indianapolis 500 qualifying, where veteran Graham Rahal survived a disastrous oversight by his pit crew, 2022 Indy 500 winner Marcus Ericsson survived a disastrous miscalculation behind the wheel, rookie Nolan Siegel survived a meeting with the wall – but lost his spot in the race – and Scott McLaughlin nearly lost his voice after learning he’d posted the fastest pole-winning run in Indianapolis 500 history. “Was it?” McLaughlin blurted, his voice going up nearly a full octave, when an NBC trackside reporter congratulated him on his record-setting run, which averaged a terrifying 234.220 mph. And this was terrifying, this whole day, as it is every year. Qualifying at the Indianapolis 500, where each car goes out alone, is more unnerving for the drivers than the actual race, where 33 cars jockey for position at speeds exceeding 220 mph. That’s not exactly relaxing, but it’s nothing like qualifying day – with the racecar lightened up and trimmed out and hitting speeds approaching 240 mph on wheels gripping the track with everything they’ve got.
